Balancing training vs productivity

Training vs productivity

Today, let’s tackle a topic that’s crucial in today’s ever-evolving digital landscape: training staff on new technologies without sacrificing productivity. As businesses continue to embrace technological advancements, it’s essential to ensure that your team is equipped with the knowledge and skills to leverage these tools effectively. However, the challenge lies in providing comprehensive training without disrupting day-to-day operations. So just how might we incorporate the need for learning with the daily operational demands;

Embrace a Blended Learning Approach

Whilst there’s no substitute for high-quality face-to-face classroom-style training sessions it’s true that this approach can take employees away from their desks for hours on end. Instead, consider adopting a blended learning approach that combines various methods such as online courses, webinars, workshops, and hands-on practice sessions. This allows employees to learn at their own pace while minimising disruption to their work schedules.

Prioritise Relevant Skills and Knowledge

When designing training programmes for new technologies, focus on teaching the specific skills and knowledge your people need to perform their jobs more effectively. Avoid overwhelming them with unnecessary information and instead tailor the training to address their immediate needs and challenges. By prioritising relevance, you can ensure that employees are more engaged and motivated to learn.

Provide Just-In-Time Training

Rather than bombarding employees with information all at once, provide just-in-time training that delivers the right knowledge at the right time. For example, offer short video tutorials (collectively known as micro-learning) or quick reference guides that employees can access whenever they encounter a problem or need assistance. This way, they can learn on the job without disrupting their workflow.

Personalised Learning Paths

Personalised learning paths are customised educational plans tailored to the unique needs, strengths, goals, and preferences of individual learners. This approach ensures that each employee receives training that is most relevant and effective for their personal development and career progression.  The benefits are;

  • Employees are more likely to be engaged and motivated when the learning is relevant and aligned with their personal and professional goals.
  • Customised learning experiences improve knowledge retention by addressing the specific needs and preferences of each learner.
  • Employees can apply new skills and knowledge more effectively in their roles, leading to increased productivity and performance.
  • Personalised paths support career growth, helping employees achieve their long-term career objectives and contributing to job satisfaction and retention.
  • Personalised learning can quickly adapt to the evolving needs of both the employee and the organisation, ensuring continuous improvement and agility.

Effective Time Management

The timing for training is crucial for integrating learning without disrupting productivity. Scheduling learning sessions during low-peak hours or incorporating them into regular team meetings can minimise interruptions to daily operations. Additionally, offering flexible learning schedules allows employees to choose times that best fit their workloads, ensuring they can engage with the material without feeling overwhelmed. This approach not only maintains productivity but also promotes a balanced and supportive learning environment.

Peer Learning or “Buddying”

Peer learning and buddy systems involves employees learning from and with each other through collaborative activities, discussions, and shared experiences. This method leverages the collective knowledge and skills within a team, fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment. Your people gain diverse perspectives, enhance problem-solving abilities, and build stronger relationships. It also encourages a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing, which can lead to increased innovation and productivity within the organisation.

Foster a Culture of Continuous Learning

Encourage employees to embrace a growth mindset and see learning as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Create opportunities for them to share their knowledge and experiences with one another through peer mentoring, knowledge-sharing sessions, and collaborative projects. By fostering a culture of continuous learning, you can ensure that your team remains adaptable and resilient in the face of technological changes.

Measure Progress and Provide Feedback

Just because you’ve made learning available don’t assume that’s going to improve performance.  We humans are mostly creatures of habit and the potential to “keep doing what we’ve always been doing” is significant.  It’s vital that leaders monitor employees’ progress throughout the training process and provide constructive feedback to help them improve. Use metrics such as completion rates, quis scores, and performance evaluations to assess their understanding and proficiency with the new technologies. Recognise and reward their efforts to encourage further engagement and participation.

Training staff to develop new skills doesn’t have to be a daunting task that disrupts productivity. By adopting a blended learning approach, prioritising relevant skills, providing just-in-time training, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and measuring progress, you can equip your team with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in today’s digital age. Here’s to embracing technology and empowering your team to reach new heights of success!
